I sat in the conference room sipping my coffee while I watched Cal and Blair tiptoeing around each other. It was just as amusing this morning as it had been last night when we’d all sat on Blair’s couch and shared pizza while we’d tried to come up with a way to force Ricardo’s hand.

They’d managed to reach some sort of agreement for working together, but now, they were so extremely polite to each other. Cal and Blair both reached for the sugar at the same time, paused, and then Cal took a step back and did the “be my guest” hand motion. I almost lost it.

Never. I’d never seen Cal acting this fucking chivalrous towards anyone. If they put on posh accents and started talking about the weather, that would be less weird than if they kept doing whatever the hell kind of awkward dance they were doing.

Still, at least they were speaking and behaving, and Cal wasn’t insulting Blair continuously or acting like a brat, so I supposed that was progress.

I just hoped the truce held because I didn’t know what I’d do if Cal went back to having his head up his ass. Fuck, I didn’t even know what I could do. I’d already said more than I’d wanted to and gotten more involved than usual because if I’d kept quiet, I’d have been as guilty as he was.

I didn’t want to be stuck in a situation where I’d have to choose between the man who was like a brother to me and the woman who made my soul sing.

Once they were done making coffee, they each took a seat on either side of me at the conference table.

Just like they’d done last night. It was like they needed to keep me in the middle to act as some kind of human buffer.

That was fine, too, but it made me wonder just how far they were willing to go and how long they could keep this attitude.

The door opened, and we watched the director walk into the room. He glanced at all three of us and nodded as if satisfied to see we were prompt. Either that or with the fact we’d sat side by side. It was hard to tell with him.

“Good. You’re all here. So, what have you got?”

Blair sat up straighter. “Sir. As I’ve said in my report, we’ve been following multiple leads on Ricardo, but he’s led us on a pointless chase so far. We’re trying to track down any possible leads. I have the Illuderes’ new Magical Engineer digging through their old files, trying to find anything that would shed some light on Ricardo’s next move. We also have our own people, including Char, going through the resistance’s hard drives.”

I winced. Basically, we had shit all to show for our efforts. Granted, we’d only been working the case for a little less than twenty-four hours, but we still should’ve had something.

It wasn’t even that the case was that hard, but Ricardo had
